Abijah “Nuru”

Inspired by witnessing all four of her mother’s twin pregnancies, Nuru realized that being emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually present during the birthing journey was one of her callings. Seeing how not every woman has the support system they need or desire motivated her to offer services that ensure women have a peaceful, memorable, and loving birth experience.

Since December 2016, Nuru has been a trained doula through DONA International. Currently a midwifery student studying at Midwives College of Utah. In the meantime, Nuru finds joy in supporting women and lending a helping hand to expectant mothers and their families, whether through large or small gestures. Her offerings include belly casting, placenta encapsulation, yoga, and aromatherapy, all designed to support women holistically throughout their birthing journey. Nuru weaves yoga, meditation, and exercise into her practice to help mothers stay grounded and connected to themselves during this transformative time.

Fun Fact: I love participating in African dance and I enjoy hot yoga.

Testimoniales

We are eternally grateful for the women who take the time to share their experiences with others considering S.H.E Services. They are often busy with newborns, sleep-deprived and/or other every day life task. Yet, they sacrifice their precious time to provide these reviews that will hopefully help others decide that we are the best option when it comes to women health matters and sacred healing.

My experience with Doula Nuru was great! She was very informative on subjects that I was curious about, and she wasn’t pushy. When I was finally in labor she came in & did great. She calmed me down through my contractions & she was very encouraging during my labor as well. I enjoyed this experience & if I ever get pregnant again & need a doula I will definitely hire her for the job. I truly enjoyed my experience.

I learned a lot about childbirth and newborn care with Abijah. She was also very supportive and was available to answer all of my questions. During  labor she never left my side and we did all of the breathing techniques and every position we practiced during our meetings and we also used the tens unit during early labor. Even after labor she was still very attentive. & I really appreciate that. I would recommend Abijah to all of my friends and family my pregnancy was successful and I was glad to have her by side for every step of the way.

I absolutely cherish my experience with Nuru. From the very beginning, she was tremendously hands on and quite insightful. I hired her in my final trimester, about 2-3 weeks before my due date and in the short amount of time we had together, I learned a lot, felt connected to her, and felt significantly supported emotionally, mentally, and physically with having our 1st little one. I didn’t know too much of what to expect with labor, birth, & postpartum, but after our consultation and prenatal I gained knowledge of what to anticipate, along with confidence to take on the challenge. When I voiced things that concerned me, as well as going over my birth plan, Nuru took the time to really hear me and give valuable input. What I appreciated most with Nuru as my doula was the breath-work and the warm encouragement. During contractions and the pushing stage, Nuru guided me on the proper way to breathe through the tense pain, let it go, and finish out strong. She was easy to get into contact with and the communication was great. My postpartum visit was full of attentive love as we sat to talk, with her helping around the house, and giving me a mommy break. I 100% would recommend her and reuse her services.

From the moment I met Abijah I knew she was the doula I wanted to work with. I had already interviewed a couple of doulas but hadn’t found the right fit yet, and I was starting to lose hope. When we met, Abijah was warm, calm, and instantly set me at ease. She asked me great questions about how I was preparing for labor and what my hopes and expectations were. Through every meeting we had, she always gave me her complete attention and I always felt she was invested in me. Her care throughout my pregnancy helped me feel confident in my ability to birth and helped prepare me for labor.

Abijah was very supportive during my pregnancy, delivery, and after birth. During the pregnancy she sat down with us to see how we envisioned the delivery process going. She was available for questions, check-ins, and doctor appointment's during the pregnancy. I went into labor early but Abijah was there without hesitation when we made the call. She was available after the delivery to ensure I was able to get some rest while at the hospital. Even after we came home she came by to check on us and was available for any questions and concerns. I recommend her to all of my friends and will definitely be calling her if have another.

It wasn't my first time doing yoga. I was looking to gain relaxation and flexibility & those were both met. I felt comfortable and relaxed during the session. I enjoyed the warm weather outside. I felt good & I enjoyed the music. My favorite part was doing yoga with other pregnant women. The cues and directions of the poses were clear. The presentation and quality of the class were outstanding. I would recommend this class to others. It was a wonderful experience.
