What’s a Birthworker (Doula)?
Historically, the responsibility of a “doula” was that of sisters, mothers, aunties; women who were part of the community and experienced in the journey of pregnancy, birth, and baby care.
The Role of a Birth-Worker
Historically, the role of a “doula” was fulfilled by sisters, mothers, aunties, and other experienced wise women within the community. These women, deeply familiar with the journey of pregnancy, birth, and baby care, were vital sources of support.
Today, Birth-workers carry on that tradition by serving as a labor support person who attends to the emotional and physical needs of a birthing family before and during labor and birth, as well as after. A Birth-worker is not a replacement for your medical caregiver (such as a midwife or doctor), nor do they take the place of your birthing companion. Instead, they work alongside these individuals to ensure your companion is involved in the birth to the extent they feel comfortable.
As Birth-workers, we are here to provide the support you need during this special time in your life. While your healthcare provider focuses on the medical well-being of you and your baby, we focus on the emotional, physical, and non-medical aspects of your birth experience.
Our goal is simple: to help you and your family have a calm, comforting, and positive birth, no matter what your plans or preferences may be.
Why We Call Ourselves Birth-Workers
At Sacred House of Eden (S.H.E), we prefer to be called Birth-workers rather than doulas. While the word “doula” is commonly used, its Greek origin translates to "slave," which does not reflect the nature of the work we do.
Though we are here to serve and support our clients, we believe that the bonds we form go far beyond servitude. We are intentional in everything we do, and we approach our work with love, care, and respect—not as subordinates, but as equals. The relationships we cultivate often feel like family; we become sisters, educators, and supporters to those who hire us.
Until a more fitting, universally recognized term is established, we will proudly refer to ourselves as Birth-workers—a term that better represents the intentional, compassionate, and empowering care we provide.

Why a S.H.E Birth-worker?
The Sacred Journey of Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a spiritual, physical, and emotional journey of transformation into motherhood. Long before "doula" became a recognized career, we were naturally fulfilling that role for our friends and sisters, offering support from the heart. At our core, we are here to empower, educate, and honor mothers throughout their journey. It is our greatest hope that the families we work with feel the spirit of this intention in every interaction.
Continuous labor support has consistently been shown to improve birth outcomes. At Sacred House of Eden, our Birth-workers bring together unique skills in Holistic Birth-work support, peer counseling, health and wellness coaching, energy healing, childbirth education, and lactation education. Our goal is to help you experience an empowered, satisfying, safe, and joyful birth.
We trust the natural wisdom of the body, allowing it to work at its own pace to provide the best birthing experience for both mother and baby.
Our Birth-workers are dedicated to ensuring that every family has the opportunity to write their own birth story. We help you understand all your birthing options and assist in creating a birth plan that aligns with your values and preferences, ensuring that you feel supported and in control throughout the process.
